Big Hair Superfan
Big Hair Superfan (noun)
Pronunciation: ‘big ‘her ‘sÜp&r’fan
Extreme cycling fanatic
Etymology: super- Latin fanaticus inspired by a deity, frenzied.
Marked by excessive enthusiasm for cycling and an intense devotion to promoting the sport.

Once there was a man who traveled to Europe to watch the classic bike races; and as he stood with the frenzied crowds along the route for the Paris-Roubaix, he wished that cycling were that well-loved in the US. Then, in 2005, he heard that the following year California would be hosting its first tour. His home turf! That night he dreamt of thousands of team-logo wearing enthusiasts showing up to chalk the road with the names of their favorite riders and to stand screaming and waving their bells when the Peloton went by, just as in Europe. Only this time, the scenery in the background was the astounding beauty of the California coast.

When he awoke from that beautiful dream, Big Hair Superfan was born.

In 2006, the crowd for the Tour of California broke attendance records for any single sporting event in California as well as any cycling event in the US, and Big Hair Superfan was thrilled to make his big debut. This year, the crowds were even larger at an estimated 1.6 million. BHSF and his Supercrew worked their magic along the roadside and the fans loved it! The photos and movies posted by the crew capture the response of the people and the excitement of this wonderful tour in general. Thanks to Amgen, their host of volunteers, and everyone else who made this race so much fun. There are rumors of two extra stages next year, and Big Hair Superfan can't wait!
